There are many topics to have a blog, there are many profitable areas in the net to start one, the most profitable ones are: make money online and make money blogging. There are many other areas in the net which are not profitable like the above mentioned, like:

Personal development

Cars

Video games

Gadgets

Affiliate marketing

Entrepreneurship

Politic

And many other ones. However, I have realized in my short period as a blogger that at the end of the day the most important factor to have a profitable blog is not the area itself. It depends entirely in two factors:

1.- Your passion to produce value.

and

2.- Your ability to market that value.

Period.

Examples of this I see every single day. For instance, there are many make money online and make money blogging blogs in the net trying to imitate the success of very profitable blogs as problogger.com or johnchow.com, a logic reasoning would be that these blogs would have more chances to be more profitable than other blogs which are in other areas not so profitable.

In despite of this there are many blogs on other areas which are by far much more profitable than the multiple blogs which want to have profits just by being in the most profitable area in the blogosphere.

Examples of these are:

dooce.com

stevepavlina.com

zenhabits.net

And many other ones. All of this demonstrate something very important to apply if you want to have a profitable blog:

You really have to write about the things you are passionate about. Period.

I think it is the main factor to have a successful and profitable blog. Only this way it is explained that bloggers like Steve Pavlina, Leo Babauta, Darren Rowse and many other bloggers produce so much content every single week, and most importantly: they continue doing it with really high standards.

Regarding to market the value you produce I think it is a by-product of producing content which is unique and useful, if you don´t have that kind of content in your blog then there won´t be value to market and you only can produce that kind of content if you write with passion the posts you publish on your blog.

This is what your passion can do.
